Sunnydale Youth Center (Willie L. Brown Jr. Youth Center) - San Francisco Year Originally Built: 1941 Sq. Feet of Building: 20,000 S.F Sq. Feet of Project: 3,257 S.F. Owner: San Francisco Housing Authority Contractor: CDX Builders Construction Cost: $385,000 The remodel of an existing teen center on the second floor of a concrete administration building in Sunnydale Housing Development is intended to engage and support its teenage residents by providing them with classes and job training facilities. This center is planned to be a prototype for San Francisco Housing Authority’s family developments. The interior space is reconfigured to convert existing rooms originally built as a health center to a computer room, classroom, and art/film studio. Existing toilet rooms and the new kitchen are made disabled accessible. New interior glazing at walls and a 24 foot long skylight along the hall make the space more inviting and open. All existing light fixtures, doors and steel windows are replaced with new. The interior space has durable low maintenance stained concrete floors and steel plate wainscots. A new accessible path of travel is provided from the existing public sidewalk and an accessible parking space is added. A new wheelchair lift at the rear of the building provides access from the parking lot to the second floor center.
