Sobel Cafe - San Francisco Sq. Feet of Building: 80,000sf Sq. Feet of Project: 1,900sf Owner: Leon Baumgarten Contractor: Owner/ builder Total Construction Cost: $150,000 Given a 1,900 square foot concrete shell in a former warehouse in the Showplace Square area and the owner's request for a place where interior designers could bring their clients, a concept for a stage set was developed. Rather than ignore the irregular shaped multi-angled walls, geometry became a theme in itself with the addition of a set of sculptural carpenter constructed booths at center stage and an angle wrap around bar. The booths add spatial definition and intimacy, yet maintain an open feeling, using an interplay of solids and voids and featuring small openings that grow progressively larger and like a telescope invite the curious to look through. A single beam above the bar provides both electrical power and lateral support for the booths. Brightly colored set elements contrast with the acid stained concrete floor and the exposed waffle slab 14 feet above. The 49 seat café functions as a coffee bar in the morning and a wine bar in the afternoon, serving lunches and early dinners. The project was done in collaboration with architect Edwin Bronstein of Philadelphia and was published in Restaurant and Hotel Magazine.
